And The Wyvern, By Naomi Claydon

The Messenger and The Wyvern

Long ago and far away, a messenger rode through the depths of the deep green forest. He had a very important message to deliver, and although he was afraid of the forest, with its witches and its Wyverns and it's strange noises heard by the pools, but he had to do his duty, and he rode on, patting his horse every now and then, who was also scared.

Finally, though, he came to the cave where it is always springtime, and realised that had come to the right place. He coughed, nervously.

The Wyvern pushed his vast, red, horsey head out of the mouth of the cave. "Huloo?"

"Er, hello," said the messenger. "I've got an important message for you. Would you like to read it?"

The Wyvern was surprised. "I've never had a message before. Who's it from?"

"It's from the Grand High Council of Wyverns. They're very important."

"I know," said the Wyvern gloomily. "They've been teaching me for four years. I'm tired of them. My head's all full of facts and useless things. I'd rather stay here and be with my friends."

"It doesn't matter," said the messenger. "You have to go and take your exams now. All those things you've been studying for the last four years will finally come in useful. You'll finally be a Grand High Wyvern, instead of just a plain one."

"But I like it here!" the Wyvern cried. "I don't want to go away."
"I know," said the messenger consolingly. "But you've not got long left until you've graduated."

"Okay," said the Wyvern sadly. "I'll go, although I'll miss my two friends."

"Why don't you write them a letter?" said the messenger.

"Good idea," said the Wyvern, then took a big blue crayon between his teeth, and wrote a letter.

This is what he wrote:

Dear Witch and Knight.
Huloo. I have to go away for a while, but I'll be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, could someone please make sure my cave is well looked after?
I shall miss you both very much, but I shall be brave, just until I can come back. When I do come back, I'll almost be a Grand High Wyvern, instead of an ordinary one. That's if I do my exams well enough, but I've been studying lots, so it should be all right.

Bye bye for now,

Wyvern (The)

The Wyvern folded up the letter, and then had the messenger deliver it to his friends.

Carefully, the Wyvern took a red handkerchief with white spots on, and then put it in it all his most precious things. There was his heart and his little gold swan. Then, making sure he had his toothbrush and his money, the Wyvern went to the front off his cave, sighed deeply, and then slid off into the forest.

When the witch and the very brave and very bold knight read the letter they were very upset, and the witch began to cry.

"There, there," said the very brave and very bold knight. "It'll be all right. The Wyvern will be back soon, but right now he has to go and become a Grand High Wyvern, and we shall be very proud of him when he does."

"You're right," said the witch.

And so the knight and the witch did not stay still and wait for the Wyvern to return, but instead went on doing knighty and witchy things, happy in the knowledge that someday, the Wyvern would come back and would carry with him more stories than anybody else could ever carry.
